Paper Masques is a budding collective of Philadelphia musicians revolving around the song writing of Zelda Pinwheel founder, Stephen Quaranta. Formed in the Summer of 2008 with former Teeth drummer, Jonas Oesterle, as a vehicle for Quaranta to perform his acoustic material; the project quickly took on a life of its own. With Quaranta and Oesterle being joined on stage by Scott Mangan (The Grass is Greener) and Mike Schmidt (The Otters) Paper Masques soon began performing for enthusiastic crowds all over the city. In Autumn of 2008, they self-released The Lemonade EP, a brief collection of home recordings (available as a free download) featuring covers, and demos from their full-length debut: Tell the Ghosts it’s Suppertime.
Tell the Ghosts it’s Suppertime (released in March of 2009 on earSnake) features an all-star cast of musicians from all over the Philadelphia area and showcases Paper Masques’ unique folk-tinged psychedelia. The thirteen musicians who populate the album’s intricately arranged tracks bring layers of depth and atmosphere to Quaranta’s songs of loss and depravity; leaving the listener to blindly wander through a lush carnival of urban decay.
Shortly after the album's much hailed release, Mangan and Schmidt absconded for Vermont, leaving Steve and Jonas to pick up the pieces. Armed with a slew of new songs, Paper Masques version 2.0 features Gretchen Lohse and Naeemah Z. Maddox on violin, and Dave Barbaree on bass...
